Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

                 Bonjour tout le monde!

At Brooklands all children from Reception through Year 6 learn to speak, read, write and even sing songs and play games in French.

At Christmas classes made lovely French Christmas cards:

Last year Years 5 and 6 enthusiastically used their skills to correspond with penpals in a school outside of Paris.  Here are some examples of their lovely letters.

We hope to continue this communication this year.

Throughout the school children are learning how to greet each other, how to say their name, their age and where they live.  Some classes play games like Tête, épaules, genoux et pieds   (Head, shoulders, knees and toes (feet)) and sing song such as Frère Jacques and L'araignée Gipsy (Incy wincy spider).

Throughout the year children in various year groups will learn many things, including colours, food, transportation,  how to give opinions and how to describe feelings.  Year 4, for example will be using a lovely book called Maman from which they will explore animals, numbers and families.

Brooklands is very lucky to have several bi-lingual children in some of our classes.  These children are French Ambassadors in their classes, helping to teach and support their classmates with the speaking and pronunciation, which many find difficult, as well as share their culture.  They are also encouraged to read from the library of French books to the younger years, building their own confidence in their reading and speaking skills.

If you are interested, there are beaucoup de chansons on the internet.  This is one of the best ways to introduce another language to children.  There are also many websites with language teaching games; the BBC Primary Languages is one.

A bientôt!
