We believe every child has the right to a high quality music education and that the skills children develop through music have a hugely positive impact on many other areas of life and learning.

Singing forms a core part of what we do. All children take part in a weekly singing assembly and have music lessons with their class, in which many areas of musicianship (such as listening, notation, composition) are taught through songs and singing games.

Children also have the opportunity to sing as part of a choir. Our choirs work towards performances both in and out of school.

We give every child at Brooklands the opportunity to learn an instrument through a year of 'taster lessons' with their class. Currently, all children in year 3 learn the recorder and all children in year 4 learn the violin. Children play short concerts each term to share what they have been learning with their families.

Many children and families choose to continue or start learning an instrument with a tutor, either individually or in small groups. Currently, instruments we are able to provide tuition for at school are:

  • Guitar
  • Keyboard
  • Violin
  • Saxophone
  • Trumpet

Lessons take place during the school day, and are taught by either Ms Brennan, our music specialist, or instrumental tutors who work on behalf of Greenwich Music Hub.

We believe that children can experience the enjoyment and satisfaction of performing as part of a group right from the very first stages of learning an instrument. We have 'Brooklands Band' which takes place after school on Tuesdays, where all children from years 3-6 are welcome, regardless whether they are currently having tuition on an instrument.

Our Christmas musicals also feature instrumental parts played by children of all abilities.

Year 3 & 4 Summer Concert 2015

In Summer Term 2015, all children in Year 3 and 4 had a series of taster lessons on an instruments. Year 3 have been learning ocarina and Year 4 either the violin, clarinet or saxophone.

At the end of term we put on a concert where children told our audience about the instruments and performed the pieces of music they had been learning after just a few weeks. There was lots of smiling and clapping from our audience, who seemed very impressed!

Singing Spectacular Concert at Royal Festival Hall

On 2nd July 2015, Year 4 went to the Royal Festival Hall to take part in a 'Celebrate Royal Greenwich Singing Spectacular Concert'. We learnt and performed songs alongside primary and secondary school children from across the borough, and were accompanied by an excellent live band. The evening was hosted by Laura Baugh  and Tommy Blaize, the lead singer in Strictly Come Dancing. We had a great time!

"Wow, wow, wow!! Last night was truly amazing. From start to finish you were all fabulous. Working with you all has been an absolute joy. You were incredibly professional throughout and worked so so hard."
"Twitter went crazy last night. You've got lots of fans. One of your biggest fans is Tommy Blaize. He was blown away by your talent and enthusiasm and wanted me to pass on his congratulations also."
"The songs sounded fabulous, you have all clearly spent a lot of time working hard with your wonderful teachers. Please keep singing and keep growing as musicians and you never know, maybe in a few years some of you could be up there at the front, hosting and singing with me and Tommy Blaize!"
"Keep working hard and believing in your talent and you can achieve anything and be whoever you want to be. If your dream is to be a singer then be a singer!"
"Hope to work with you all again very very soon - I am incredibly proud of each and every one of you... You inspire me!"

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." (Plato)
